Career and life planning news changes frequently.
General Career Trends
- No one will have the same career for a lifetime. "Job hopping" will no longer be a stigma.
- Health Science careers will grow the fastest over the next 10-12 years.
- There will be no "cruise" time for workers. Because of the fast pace of technology, workers will constantly have to "learn" and re-learn" to stay current in their profession.
- We will get new and emerging career areas as time passes and we will omit some of the old career standbys as technological discoveries are introduced to business and industry.
- Since the world is "more global", there will be more competition for business and for employment. Americans will not only be competing with Americans, but with Europeans, Asians and every other group of people across the planet.

- Homework is actually GOOD for high school students. Read Dr. Harris Cooper's latest research on this at www.duke.edu
- Florida is now requiring high school to choose a "major". Read about this at www.miamiherald.com
- You simply must read Marty Nemko's articles on careers. Here is one about the most highly OVERRATED careers http://www.usnews.com/usnews/biztech/articles/061218/18overrated.intro.htm
Economic Trends that May Impact Your Future
- Globalization--The concept of a smaller world (because of technology) means that what happens on the other side of the world affects occupational trends in your area. It also means that there will be more competition for businesses and for workers.
- Economy--Because of globalization and the "smaller world" concept, the world will continue to have "mini-booms and busts". There will be upsurges in some industries and actual disappearances in other industries. Workers will no longer have assurance of the stability of their profession. The "boom economy" of China and India will continue to affect the world economy in greater ways.
- Technology--Because new discoveries in technology will continue to emerge, so will new, emerging occupations that have to do with operating, selling, and maintaining the new technologies. This means that the average worker will be compelled to learn and re-learn new skills. There will be no time for "resting on your laurels".
- Workers/Population Trends--Baby boomers will create severe shortages in many occupations. Because of the "brain drain" of long time employees in key areas of education, medicine, and business, potential retirees will be encouraged to remain in different capacities to "pass the torch". New businesses will be created to cater to baby boomers' needs and wants. The world of work will continue to evolve into one which is more fluid, more part-time and more entrepreneurial. Citizens will begin to conceptualize themselves as a "corporation of me", not tied to a specific business or industry. The "loyalty concept" will continue to erode--on both the part of the business and the worker.
- Medical/Biomedical Discoveries--With the completion of the Human Genome Project, medical and biomedical discoveries advance rapidly. For every new discovery, comes completely new and emerging occupations at an exponential rate.
- Global Terrorism--Security-focused businesses will continue to grow to ensure countries' safety. People will continue to seek out more "walled and gated" communities to "make the world go away". New technologies will be invented (and therefore, new job descriptions) to deal more efficiently and effectively with the growing threat of extremist groups, which have no common ethnicity or national borders.
